April 2024: Dear AMMPARO/ St. James supporters,

Please join the AMMPARO Committee in support of St. James for their Annual Silent Auction on Saturday, April 20, 2024 from 6pm-9pm. Address: 1602 W. 43rd St. Houston, TX 77018. Auction items of $50 value or more are needed. Please contact Emily Triantaphyllis, ewtrianta@gmail.com or Rebecca Shields, rshields63@gmail.com if you have items to contribute for their silent auction.

In December 2023, our committee launched a new, sustaining initiative to provide 100lbs of rice, 100lbs of beans, 40 boxes of spaghetti, and $200/month in rental and utility support to St. James Family Life Center. We launched our sustaining campaign to help meet the basic needs of individuals and families served by St. James Family Life Center.

The AMMPARO Committee still needs your help! At present, through the generosity of our Christ the King community, we are meeting our monthly fundraising goal by half. Each month we have $250 of our $500 monthly goal coming in. Thank you to those who have committed to donating monthly and filling St. James’ food pantry already. For those called to support the work of St. James, just $10 a month can provide 10lbs of beans or rice or five boxes of spaghetti to hungry families right here in Houston.

When we meet our $500/month fundraising goal, we can provide food security, stable housing, and hope to new immigrants trying to make Houston their home. If you are interested in learning more about St. James, please join our committee on Sunday, May 12th during the AMMPARO/St. James Mission Offering month for an enriching adult forum at 9:30 am followed by a temple talk during the 11am service. During the forum, St. James’ director, Robert Rivera, will be joined by several individuals who have benefited from the center’s services, along with a screening of an impactful short video about three young women’s border crossing and immigration experiences.

Opportunity to mentor high school-age refugees

PAIR, the Partnership for Advancement & Immersion of Refugees, is recruiting adults for its Global Leaders program to mentor and empower refugee high school students to become community leaders. Through mentoring, tutoring, college access, and leadership development programs, PAIR equips students with life and academic skills for success.

This is an in-person volunteer opportunity at one of PAIR’s high school sites in southwest Houston. Please contact Allison Hall, PAIR’s community engagement manager, by email at allison@pairhouston.org, or by calling the PAIR office at (713) 771-1111.
