Dear faithful people of Christ the King Lutheran Church,
I wear two hats at our church, interim pastor, and chair of the Property Management Committee. Therefore, this Grace Note has two parts, one for each hat.
Property first.
Our major summer projects, funded by our Renew, Repair, Refresh fund appeal to which you so generously contributed are nearly completed; only the metal and glass doors from the Narthex to the memorial garden/columbarium remain and we expect them any day now. All other work on the exterior of our Rice Village campus – caulking, painting, repair, etc. – has been completed.
Property Management added one extra project since we had extra funds: all the outdoor teak furniture – benches and chairs – have been cleaned and refinished. Seeing the quality of this work, our altar guild contracted with Juarez Painting to refinish the altar rails and the table/altar in the narthex. These projects have also been completed. We’re going to re-arrange the furniture and declutter the narthex.
The Altar Guild also had the kneeling cushions at the altar rail cleaned and re-covered.
We have approved, and Crossing Borders has completed several projects including painting classrooms and installing a canopy for shade over the playground. In partnership with us, Crossing Borders will also be replacing the whole fence along Rice Boulevard to increase security by making the fence slightly higher.
Finally, the contractor working across Rice Boulevard and using our Rice parking lot for parking, storage, staging, and their construction office will install a new concrete connector between our Rice Parking lot and the Chaucer House any day now.
When all this is completed, we will bless and rededicate all that we have refreshed, renewed and repaired at our Rice Village campus and focus on developing our Memorial Drive campus.
Interim Pastor matters.
The Worship and Music Committee has recommended to the October 14 Congregation Council meeting that, beginning November 1 and 2, All Saints Sunday, we return to using wine at all communion services, but also offer non-alcohol wine. Worshipers wishing for non-alcohol wine may sit anywhere in the nave and go to the altar rail quadrant nearest the Pray Ground to receive holy communion. We’ll continue to give appropriate directions after the council acts on this.
Peace and Joy – and Courage!
Mandy
