April 13: Introduction to D. Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri
Dr. Carrie Allen Tipton will introduce Dietrich Buxtehude’s work Membra Jesu Nostri offered by Bach Society Houston at Christ the King Church during Holy Week, April 13 and 18. Dr. Tipton will give listening samples of the musical elements, discuss the context and interpretation of the medieval poem used in the music, and explore ways in which Buxtehude’s setting evokes and captures some of the paradoxes in the Christian faith.

April 27: Music at the Symphony: Gustav Mahler’s Symphony of a Thousand
Join noted musicologist Dr. Howard Pollack, for a discussion about the colorful life and work of late-romantic Austrian composer, Gustav Mahler on Sunday morning, April 27. During it’s centennial season and part of an educational engagement initiative, the Houston Symphony is hosting several lectures and presentations focused on Gustav Mahler both in the community and at Jones Hall leading up to its performances on May 9 & 10 of Mahler’s massive Eighth Symphony, known as the Symphony of a Thousand.
