Join Houston’s leading ensembles, Bach Society Houston, Mercury, Piping Rock Singers, Houston Early Music, and Ars Lyrica Houston, for a week of cutting-edge music — two of the six events take place at Christ the King Church!
Madrigals, Motets, and Merryment
Friday, February 17, 7:00 p.m. at Christ the King Church
Join our member Karl Lothmann and the Piping Rock Singers as they present Madrigals, Motets and Merryment, an evening of rarely heard street song style madrigals and beloved favorites. The program combines works by Dering, Gibbons and Janequin with a sampling of madrigals by other treasured Renaissance composers.
Bach Family Motets
Sunday, February 19, 6:00 p.m. in the nave
Bach Society Houston presents the final concert of the 2017 Houston Early Music Festival: Bach Family Motets. The Bach family was enormous — Johann Sebastian had eight siblings and 20 children, many of them composers, and he almost certainly studied their compositions. Join Bach Society Houston as they trace the development of this incredible genre from the earliest works of the Bach clan, through Johann Sebastian’s marvelous Fürchte dich nicht, one of the pinnacles of western choral music. The pre-concert talk in the parish hall begins at 5:15 p.m. with Indiana University Professor of Musicology Daniel Melamed, one of the world’s leading authorities on Bach Family motets, and whose editions the Bach Choir will be performing. Tickets:$25-$35/student $5. Reserved seating is available; visit bachsocietyhouston.org to buy tickets.
