Compassion Week April 12-18

compassion week 2015Mayor Parker’s designation of Houston as a Compassionate City is being celebrated through Compassion Week from April 12-18, 2015 and YOU can be part of it!

Compassion Week offers Houstonians the chance to look around, reflect, and ask ourselves, “Are we co-creating the kind of city we want to call our own and pass on to our children? During this week, what can each one of us do to focus on compassion and make our city come alive with a spirit of togetherness?

Compassion is about noticing how we treat ourselves and others–and then doing whatever we can, individually and together, to raise that bar.  Each person can make a difference.  Here are some suggestions for how you can participate in Compassion Week at Christ the King Lutheran Church:
Feed the Homeless Monday, April 13 and 27, 5:45 p.m. (CTK Parish Hall)
Serve Breakfast at SEARCH Wednesday, April 15, 7:30 – 11:00 a.m.
For more opportunities, check out the Compassion Week Calendar

Additional times of the month when you can participate in compassion with Christ the Lutheran Church are:

Feed the Homeless
Join us on the 2nd and 4th Monday evenings of each month at Christ the King Church to make sandwiches and prepare meals, and then deliver them to downtown homeless individuals. Members and friends of all ages are invited to join in this ministry hosted by the young adults of Christ the King Church. Volunteers are welcome to help out with meal preparation, downtown delivery, or both! We will meet on Monday, April 13 and 27 at 5:45 p.m. Contact Anne Morrow.

Serve Breakfast at SEARCH
Christ the King Church members and friends volunteer on the third Wednesday of each month to serve breakfast and assist with the preparation of the noon meal for clients of SEARCH Homeless Services. Our next outing will be on Wednesday, April 15, 7:30 – 11:00 a.m. Contact Beverly Davis.

Montrose Grace Place April 9
Montrose Grace Place offers vulnerable youth ages 13-21 a hot meal and a safe, welcoming shelter from the street every Thursday evening from 6 to 10 p.m. Of course, we can always use more volunteers to cook, set up, and serve the meals. Volunteers are also welcome to help with our bimonthly meals. Christ the King Church night is the 2nd Thursday of the even months! The next date is Thursday, April 9, and servers are needed between 5:15 and 7:45 p.m. to set the tables, dish up the food, and load the dishwashers. Contact Rebecca Shields.

Houston Food Bank
Join our enthusiastic, fun-loving and hard-working volunteers at the Houston Food Bank on Saturday, May 9. In March our group put together 898 Senior Boxes. Those nearly 900 boxes equal a year’s worth of food for 75 senior citizens who qualify for this type of assistance, and it would not have happened without Christ the King Church members and friends.  We hope to see you (aged 8 and up)  at the next outing to the Houston Food Bank!  Please email for information and to RSVP for this outing—and let Justin and Yuricel know if you would like to meet in the church parking lot at 7:45 a.m. and carpool to the Food Bank.
