During Lent, we again join Lutheran World Relief’s Project Promise: Building Kits of Care. Each week, we collect a different item that will be used to assemble Personal Care Kits that give people around the world tools to stay healthy in life’s most challenging situations.
Our goal is to assemble at least 100 LWR Care Kits during Lent.
Here’s our collection schedule:
Anytime: Bath towels (new, light-weight, maximum 52″x27″, dark color recommended)
March 4: Toothbrushes (adult size, in original packaging)
March 11: Combs(sturdy, please! No picks or fine toothed combs)
March 18: Nail Clippers (metal, attached file optional)
March 25: Bars of Soap (each kit includes 2 bars of soap)

Join us on the 2nd and 4th Monday evenings of each month at Christ the King Church to make sandwiches and prepare meals, and then deliver them to downtown homeless individuals. Members and friends of all ages are invited to join in this ministry hosted by the young adults of Christ the King Church. Volunteers are welcome to help out with meal preparation, downtown delivery, or both! We will meet on August 10 and 24 at 5:45 p.m. Contact Anne Morrow .
We have three great ministry opportunities this weekend.
Saturday, May 9, 7:30 a.m.-noon:
Join the fun and faithful volunteers going to THE HOUSTON FOOD BANK. Members and friends of all ages (including children as young as 8 years old accompanied by an adult) are invited to join this enthusiastic group as we perform a wonderful service, burn calories, build muscles, and make new friends all at the same time. The group leaves the church parking lot at 7:30 a.m. and returns about noon. For more information and to RSVP, contact Justin and Yuricel.
Saturday, May 9, 9:00 a.m.-on:
Join members and friends in a WORKDAY at Christ the King Church on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. to help refinish the courtyard benches. The group will work as long as needed and folks can come and go as their time permits. All refinishing materials will be provided, but volunteers should bring their own work gloves. No prior woodworking experience necessary! Questions? Contact David Jurgens.
Sunday, May 10 after both services:
We will host a BREAD FOR THE WORLD and TEXAS IMPACT offering of letters and postcards after both Sunday services. Please take a few moments to write a letter or postcard to our elected officials to advocate on behalf of the Childhood Nutrition Reauthorization Act and/or to urge expansion of Medicaid coverage in Texas. Women and children are hardest hit by poverty and hunger. How fitting that we remember the world’s most vulnerable on Mother’s Day! Information, sample letters, writing materials, and stamps will be provided. Check out www.bread.org or http://texasimpact.org.
Our third outing of the year is right around the corner! We will be volunteering on Saturday, May 9 at 8 a.m., and we hope you can join us.
The March volunteers had a great time doing their part in putting together almost 900 senior boxes! (Those boxes provide two weeks’ worth of food to seniors who qualify for meal assistance.)
If you are able to join us on Saturday, May 9, please email us so we can provide the Food Bank staff with an estimate of volunteers.
If you plan to come and wish to carpool to the Food Bank, please mention that in your response so we can be sure to organize a group if needed. We would be happy to facilitate a carpool, but if it is requested, it will leave Christ the King’s parking lot at 7:30 am (not the usual 7:45 time).
Remaining 2015 HFB volunteering dates:
Saturday, July 11; Saturday, September 12; Saturday, November 14
Thank you for all of your hard work!
